Hi.

Thanks for stopping by.  This is my invitation into my life, work, and our collective creativity, love, and kindness.  I hope you enjoy your time here.

COMPARING MISERY

COMPARING MISERY

Thoughts behind Comparing Misery

Human pain and the human experience are complex things. It is easy to forget that our normal is not normal for every other human.

We see ourselves so differently than other people see us.
We experience our lives so differently than other people experience their lives.

Comparing Misery is about our pain and experiences.
We all experience times of hopelessness, fear, loneliness, and overwhelm. It is easy to look at other people and forget that the human experience is a mixed bag for all of us. There are seasons and rhythms for all of us. The complexity of humanity remains a mystery, but we have some choice in how we engage it. I believe that compassion, empathy, love, grace, and freedom lead to a deeper and richer life. I also believe that comparison and judgement inhibit connection, depth, authenticity, and love.

Theodore Roosevelt said, "Comparison is the thief of joy."
Plato said, "Be kind because everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle."

Ironically, there is controversy over who actually said those quotes. Oh, humans. I said, "Who cares? Let's all get better."

COMPARING MISERY

let's stop comparing misery
your dreams are black with hopelessness, mine are suffocating fear.

let's stop comparing misery.
you control your pain, while I could drown the world in my tears.

let's stop comparing misery.
you hide your shame with pretty things, my heart is open wide.

let's stop comparing misery.
humanity is terrifying.

let's lessen the divide.

let's stop comparing misery.
there's no right way to grieve, to hold our fear and celebration.

let's stop comparing misery.
let's make room for contradiction but not for condemnation.
